  293. 1.  Centralized Alerting and Reporting has not been fully
  294.     implemented at this time. The /Alertpath option is currently
  295.     reserved for the implementation of Centralized Alerting and
  296.     Reporting.

  298. 2.  When a macro virus is detected in conjuction with 
  299.     other viruses, the macro virus remover will not work. 
  300.     If this occurs, remove the other virus first or work
  301.     in a separate area.

  304. INSTALLATION
  305.  
  306. * INSTALLING THE PRODUCT *
  307.  
  308. Perform one of the following installation procedures
  309. depending on which version of VirusScan for DOS you
  310. want to install.
  311.  
  312. 1.  For the installable version of VirusScan for DOS,
  313.     take the following steps:
  314.  
  315.     a.  Execute the INSTALL.BAT program.
  316.     b.  Follow the on-screen instructions.
  317.  
  318.     By default, McAfee's installation program makes 
  319.     a directory on the hard disk drive named
  320.     C:\MCAFEE\VIRUSCAN and copies the program files
  321.     to that directory.
  322.  
  323.     The installation script adds the directory
  324.     to the path statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file
  325.     and adds two lines that call and recall the
  326.     VShield program to provide on-access virus
  327.     prevention. For the most complete virus protection,
  328.     McAfee recommends using the /ANYACCESS switch.
  329.  
  330.     or  
  331.  
  332. 2.  For the non-installable version of VirusScan for
  333.     DOS, take the following steps:
  334.  
  335.     a.  Make a directory on your hard disk drive.
  336.     b.  Copy the files to that directory.
  337.     c.  Add that directory to the path statement in
  338.         your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

  357. * TESTING YOUR INSTALLATION *
  358.  
  359. The Eicar Standard AntiVirus Test File is a combined effort 
  360. by anti-virus vendors throughout the world to come up 
  361. with one standard by which customers can verify their 
  362. anti-virus installations.
  363.  
  364. To test your installation, copy the following line into its
  365. own file and name it EICAR.COM.
  366.  
  367. X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
  368.  
  369. When done, you will have a 69- or 70-byte file.
  370.  
  371. When VirusScan is applied to this file, SCAN will report 
  372. finding the EICAR-STANDARD-AV-TEST-FILE virus.
  373.  
  374. It is important to know that THIS IS NOT A VIRUS. However,
  375. users often have the need to test that their installations 
  376. function correctly. The anti-virus industry, through the 
  377. European Institute for Computer Antivirus Research, has 
  378. adopted this standard to facilitate this need.
  379.  
  380. Please delete the file when installation testing is 
  381. completed so unsuspecting users are not unnecessarily 
  382. alarmed.
  383.  
  384.  
  385. * UNINSTALLING THE PRODUCT * 
  386.  
  387. 1.  Execute VSHIELD/REMOVE to remove VShield from
  388.     memory, then remove the files from your hard
  389.     drive and remove any lines in your AUTOEXEC.BAT
  390.     file that call VShield. If an error message is
  391.     displayed indicating that VShield could not be
  392.     removed from memory, take the following step. 
  393.         
  394. 2.  Edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file and remove the line
  395.     that calls VShield, then reboot your system. On
  396.     restarting your system, VShield will not be loaded
  397.     into memory and you can remove the files from your
  398.     hard drive.
  399.  
  400.     Note: If the files are removed from your hard drive
  401.     prior to removing VShield from memory, an error
  402.     message will be displayed until you remove
  403.     VShield from memory or restart your system.
  404.

  442. Q:  How much conventional memory is required to run 
  443.     VirusScan for DOS?
  444.  
  445. A:  A minimum of 490K of free coventional memory is
  446.     recommended to run VirusScan for DOS.
  447.  
  448.  
  449. Q:  What is the difference between the VShield DOS TSR
  450.     and VirusScan for DOS?
  451.  
  452. A: #1  VShield installs itself in memory and stays
  453.        resident in order to monitor your system for
  454.        viral activity. If an infected program is
  455.        executed or an infected boot sector is accessed,
  456.        VShield will display a warning that a virus
  457.        is present.
  458.  
  459. A: #2  VirusScan for DOS is an on-demand scanner that
  460.        allows you to perform a complete or partial
  461.        scan of your computer at any time. VirusScan
  462.        for DOS can run customized scans through a
  463.        large set of command line switches.
  464.  
  465.  
  466. Q:  How can I run VirusScan for DOS from a Netware login
  467.     script without running out of memory?
  468.  
  469. A:  If you are having memory problems when trying to
  470.     run VirusScan for DOS from a NetWare login script,
  471.     take these steps to resolve the issue:
  472.  
  473.     1.  Rename LOGIN.EXE to LOGIN1.EXE and remove
  474.         any references to VirusScan.
  475.     2.  Create a batch file named LOGIN.BAT.
  476.     3.  On the first line of the batch file, run your
  477.         scan with whatever switches you want to include.
  478.     4.  On the second line of the batch file, run
  479.         LOGIN1.EXE.
  480.  
  481.     By taking these steps, you eliminate the problem
  482.     of having LOGIN.EXE and SCAN.EXE in memory at the
  483.     same time. This allows VirusScan for DOS to run and
  484.     your login script to be processed without problems.
  485.  
  486.  
  487. Q:  Can I clean the Master Boot Record (MBR) of a
  488.     Windows NT file system (NTFS) formatted hard drive?
  489.  
  490. A:  Yes. Take these steps to clean the MBR. Boot the
  491.     Windows NT computer from a virus-free DOS bootable
  492.     (system) diskette. Then run VirusScan for DOS;
  493.     SCAN C: /BOOT /CLEAN. This will clean the NTFS
  494.     Master Boot Sector and allow Windows NT to
  495.     successfully reboot from the hard disk drive.
  496.     However, VirusScan for DOS will not be able to read
  497.     the rest of the NTFS partition.
  498.  
  499.     After starting Windows NT, execute VirusScan for
  500.     Windows NT to detect and clean Windows NT file
  501.     infections.
  502.  
  503.  
  504. Q:  Can I update VirusScan's data files to detect
  505.     new viruses?
  506.  
  507. A:  Yes. If your data files are dangerously out-of-date,
  508.     VirusScan for DOS will prompt you to update them.
  509.     If you have Internet access, you can download
  510.     updated VirusScan data files from the McAfee Web 
  511.     Site, BBS, or other online resources. To download 
  512.     from the McAfee Web Site, follow these steps:
  513.  
  514.     1.  Go to the McAfee Web Site (http://www.mcafee.com
  515.         or http://205.227.129.97).
  516.  
  517.     2.  Click on the Download McAfee button in the upper
  518.         left hand column or frame.
  519.  
  520.     3.  Click on Update Your DAT Files to update DAT files.
  521.  
  522.     4.  View the information provided on new DAT files
  523.         and downloading.
  524.  
  525.     5.  Click on Download this Month's DAT.
  526.    
  527.     6.  Data file updates are stored in a compressed form 
  528.         to reduce transmission time. Unzip the files into
  529.         a temporary directory, then copy the files to the
  530.         appropriate directory, replacing your old files.

  532.     7.  Before performing any scans, shut down your
  533.         computer, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again.
  534.
